Deryk Houston

|
Deryk Houston has spent many years developing and perfecting his painting style. Upon completion of his studies in Canada, Deryk travelled to Europe in hopes of studying art abroad. He was accepted into L'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. At
this time, Deryk decided to pursue art as a career. Deryk Houston's wide range of work demonstrates how the arts provide ways for us to understand each other as human beings. His art focuses on life cycles, and the extremes in nature and
cultures.
Deryk Houston paints predominately in acrylic on canvas, and has created numerous set designs for theatre. Also, many of Deryk’s paintings have been featured in several different children’s books as well as for the new CD cover jacket
“Sarajevo – Belfast” by Vedran Smailovic and Tommy Sands. His artwork has been published in a children’s book based on events in Bosnia. Deryk has been the subject of many magazine and newspaper interviews and television appearances including BBC Radio,
CBC Radio and Television News, and Soviet Television.
With Scottish roots, a love for Canada and a fascination for travel, Deryk has always had a global interest in painting. In 1988 the City of Vancouver selected to feature a series of
paintings by Deryk in the former Soviet Union as part of a cultural exchange.
In 2002, the Iraqi Minister of Culture agreed to aid Deryk in creating a 24-foot bronze sculpture of a mother and child. The 8-tonne bronze, finished at a Baghdad
blast furnace, will be the focal point for his permanent outdoor Peace Sanctuary near Hudson’s Hope, B.C. Deryk’s vision for the peace sanctuary will become part of a National Film Board documentary.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“In my work I am
attracted to anything that is fertile. The scent of a tangled forest floor, a ploughed field, spawning salmon, a garden full of seeds, orchards, greenhouses, a field of sunflowers and children’s issues- because they are the future generations. Few things
can compare to a walk through a tangled tunnel of light-streaked branches. The path is never the same experience as the seasons, weather and light are constantly changing. I love the abundant display of nature in an orchard. The light filters through
leaves and branches reminding me of stained glass in churches."
