Peter Wyse

Peter Wyse was born in the Year of the Dog and currently resides with his wife, son, and Labrador in British Columbia. He was introduced to art at an early age through his grandfather, R.E. Walker who schooled his grandson in the practice of painting and
the discipline required by an artist.
Peter Wyse's art philosophy follows that of Samuel Butler: “The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him or not only he will not scold you, he will make a fool of himself
too.” ca. 1912
Peter Wyse’s eclectic art interests range from Matisse and Rothko to the murals of mesoamerica. These influences are evident within his spatial relationships and with his lively use of colours and line. Wyse has worked with a
wide range of mediums. He now paints exclusively with acrylics. Insatiably curious, Peter takes great delight in the mundane, using his unique style of layering and sanding flat coats of paint to reveal how the ordinary can become
extraordinary.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“I live within a landscape filled with dogs and frogs, flora and fauna, and even a rubber duck or two. My home is both peaceful and playful. Silence is interrupted by the rhythmic message of the frogs and
the howling wolves that reside next door; it is the band of musicians who I paint. The French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre believed that life must have meaning, but it is we, ourselves, who must create this meaning in our own lives. Perhaps this is why I
have collected symbols like the apple, which alludes to life, or the rubber duck, who witnesses the most intimate moments of our lives, and much like the dog, plays the fool with us too.”
