Shirley is a retired nurse who started painting again on a fulltime basis in 1986. A wife, mother of 3 sons and grandmother to 5 children she finds the beauty of her surroundings in Alberta's Rocky Mountains a true inspiration for her work. Her medium
of choice is gouache because it allows the luminousity of light to become a feature in her miniatures. A self taught artist, Shirley continues to explore various techniques, sizes and formats within her work in a continuous desire to express her love of
painting.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I've always liked to draw, but art had to take a back seat to the more practical matters that faced a young nursing graduate and mother in the 1950's. I worked as a nurse, married, raised three sons and did
art when I could. I started going to a nursery school where I lived and began sketching the children. I also sketched at a jazz ballet class. They didn't pose for me; I had to capture them in motion. Often after a shift at the hospital, I would stay
and draw geriatic patients - attention for them and models for me. Drawing is fun, and I still love to do it."
