Ted Griffiths, an award winning Alberta born artist, worked as an art teacher for over 30 years in Alberta, British Columbia and Australia. He has taught wood carving and stone sculpting at the Naramata Center in British Columbia for 11
years.
Ted’s sculptures match the natural beauty and strength of the stone with the warmth of his subject matter. He specialized in Grizzly bears, but has a varied repertoire that includes other animals, the human figure and plant forms. His
abiding passion for working with stone is what keeps him in the studio for hours patiently bringing a form to life. By waxing and buffing the raw soapstone to a rich luster, Ted brings out the natural beauty of the stone in the final stages of working on
a sculpture.
Ted does not consider carving to be work. Rather, “it energizes and nourishes the soul.”
Ted’s work has been shown in galleries in Western Canada since 1991. His sculptures are in over 40 countries and are in both private
and corporate collections. Now that he is retired from teaching, sculpting in one of his priorities in life.
In 2004 Ted represented Alberta along with two other artists in the Carnaval de Quebec and won the national snow carving competition. He
also studied marble sculpting for 6 weeks in Pietra Santa, Italy in 2003. Sculpting in snow and marble has enhanced his wok with soapstone.
Ted’s devotion to his art can be summed up in his plan “to sculpt right up to the point that I can’t lift
the tools or stone anymore”.
Please always be conscious of rings, fingernails and jewellery when handling your carving. These items may scratch your sculpture.
